The City of Ormoc is a 1st class city in the province of Leyte, Philippines. The city's name is derived from ogmok, an old Visayan term for lowland or depressed plain. It is the first non-provincial city of the Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 177,524 people. Ormoc is the economic, cultural, commercial and transportation hub of western Leyte.
Ormoc City is an independent component city, not subject to regulation from the Provincial Government of Leyte. However, the city is part of the congressional district IV of Leyte together with Albuera, Kananga, Merida, and Isabel towns.
In November 1991, the Ormoc region was inundated by Tropical Storm Thelma (local name: Uring). Flash floods and landslides killed an estimated 6,000 people, mostly in Ormoc itself.
Geography
Ormoc City is a port city and is the largest city by land area in Leyte and second largest in Eastern Visayas after Calbayog City in Samar. Fronting Ormoc Bay, the city's terrain is mostly of g...
On November 5, 1991, at around 10:45a.m., the usually quiet and peaceful city of Ormoc was brought to its knees. The whole world stood still and focused its attention on possibly the greatest natural disaster that occurred in this century in view of the number of fatalities. More than 5,000 perished and there were about 3,000 missing individuals who are also presumed dead. The strength of the current of the swirling waters devastated a greater part of the city. But the impact has taken its toll greatly on the poor residents of the city whose dwellings are just made of cheap and light materials. Most of those who died were poor. Other than those deceased, there were also the "hidden victims" who have to brave through the crisis to help bury the dead and distribute much needed food and water.

The Battle of Ormoc Bay was a series of air-sea battles between Imperial Japan and the United States in the Camotes Sea in the Philippines between 11 November 1944 and 21 December 1944, part of the Battle of Leyte in the Pacific campaign of World War II. The battles resulted from Japanese operations to reinforce and resupply their forces on Leyte and U.S. attempts to interdict them.
Background
After gaining naval control over the Western Pacific in mid-1944, the United States and the Allies of World War II attacked the Philippines in October, landing troops at Leyte Gulf on the east side of Leyte on 20 October 1944. The island of Leyte was defended by about 20,000 Japanese; American General Douglas MacArthur thought that the occupation of Leyte would be only a prelude to the major engagement on Luzon. For the Japanese, maintaining control of the Philippines was essential because their loss would enable the Allies to sever their oil supply line from Borneo.
